What sound does a pitchfork make? How can a hot water bottle and a metal sheet create sound effects for a film?
“Scratch Bam” and other sounds that objects can make. An interactive audio-visual performance which transports children into the magical world of foley—the art of adding sounds to the cinematic image using everyday objects. In the pioneering sound workshop, which looks more like a domestic kitchen or store room than a studio, children encounter a range of utility objects rather than musical instruments: pots and pans, whistles, staplers, horns, fruit, vegetables, balloons, ball bearings, packs of cards, springs, bicycle bells, hosepipes, typewriters, roller-skates and a whole lot more... Using these, the tools of their trade, two musicians create sounds to accompany a compilation of scenes from animations and old movies. Fast-paced and comic, the images stimulate the children’s imagination and powers of observation.
The children follow the rhythmic lead provided by the two ‘maestros of sound’ and actively participate in a game of knowledge, discovering in the process how sound can embellish a moving line or how an image can answer a pan that goes BANG!
