Pauliteiros de Miranda

Being a pauliteiro is a source of pride in Miranda do Douro. Traditionally linked to the chosen groups of each village, the pauliteiros found in the school new forms of continuity and sharing. Today, the sticks echo in the corridors, in the playgrounds and in improvised rehearsals, where young people learn from each other, repeat steps and share «lhaços» as if sharing a living language.

With the reinforcement of the work developed by the National Plan for the Arts, new spaces for learning and participation have been opened, giving greater expression to female and mixed groups and bringing more young people closer to Mirandese culture. In this performance, dance, music and the Mirandese language meet in the same gesture. On stage, pauliteiros and musicians — all students — celebrate a living tradition, transported to the present with pride, energy and a sense of community.
