We have all probably heard, at least faintly, the sound world that resonates inside spring mattresses. Spring Quartet finds its way into it and amplifies it. There is great tension in all these springs, and by using a contact microphone (i.e., a mic that picks up sound from solid materials), it is possible to amplify this sonic world and use the mattress itself as an instrument or a sound sculpture, where sound is created through contact with the springs—whether by fingers, a violin bow, or other means.
At BIG BANG, one mattress from the quartet will be suspended, and audience members are invited to play, touch, and explore the instrument, discovering how sound and everyday objects can be used in a creative and unconventional way
